Were Not Our Hearts Burning?
Were Not Our Hearts Burning?
Recognizing Jesus in the Middle of the Journey
There’s a quiet story tucked into the days after the resurrection.
Two disciples are walking along the road to Emmaus.
Leaving Jerusalem.
Leaving the place where everything had just happened.
They’re not celebrating.
They’re confused.
Disappointed.
Trying to make sense of it all.
Walking Away
They had hoped Jesus was the one.
They had believed.
They had trusted.
And now, from their perspective, it was over.
So they walked away.
Not in rebellion—but in uncertainty.
And maybe that feels familiar.
There are moments when we don’t stop believing entirely…
but we quietly drift.
We step back.
We move on.
We try to process what didn’t turn out the way we expected.
Jesus Draws Near
As they walk, something unexpected happens.
Jesus comes alongside them.
But they don’t recognize Him.
He walks with them.
He listens.
He asks questions.
“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
They begin to explain everything—what happened, what they hoped, what went wrong.
And the whole time, Jesus is right there.
When We Don’t Recognize Him
It’s possible to be close to Jesus and not realize it.
To be in a season where He is present…
speaking…
moving…
And still miss it.
Not because He’s distant.
But because our expectations have shaped what we’re looking for.
They expected victory in one form.
When it didn’t come the way they thought, they struggled to see what God was actually doing.
Reframing the Story
As they walk, Jesus begins to explain the Scriptures to them.
He shows them how the story was always leading here.
How suffering was not the end—but part of the plan.
Slowly, something begins to shift.
Not in their circumstances.
But in their understanding.
Hearts That Burn Again
Later, after Jesus reveals Himself and disappears, they say:
“Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road?”
Something had been happening all along.
Even when they didn’t recognize Him…
their hearts were responding.
There was a quiet stirring.
A sense that something was true, alive, real.
God Is At Work—Even When We Don’t See It
This is the beauty of the story.
Jesus was with them before they realized it.
He was speaking before they understood it.
He was working before they could see it.
And the same is true for us.
God is often moving in ways we don’t immediately recognize.
In conversations.
In quiet moments.
In the middle of confusion.
The Invitation to Pay Attention
Sometimes we’re looking for something dramatic.
Clear signs.
Big moments.
Obvious direction.
But often, God meets us in something quieter.
A thought that lingers.
A truth that resonates.
A sense that something is stirring inside.
Hearts that begin to burn again.
Turning Back
When the disciples finally recognize Jesus, everything changes.
They don’t keep walking away.
They turn around.
They go back to Jerusalem—the place they had just left.
Because once you see Him clearly, you can’t keep going the same direction.
A Gentle Invitation
Maybe you’re in a season where things haven’t gone the way you expected.
Maybe you’ve been walking, processing, trying to make sense of it all.
Here’s the invitation:
Jesus is closer than you think.
Even if you don’t recognize Him yet.
Even if you’re still figuring things out.
Pay attention to what’s stirring.
Where your heart feels alive again.
Where truth feels real.
Because He may already be walking with you.
And when you see Him—
it may just change your direction.
